Inspired by a long legacy of feminine timepieces

The designing and creation of timepieces for women is an essential element of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s history. As far back as the 1880s, the LeCoultre Calibre 7HP equipped enamelled, diamond-set and pearl-beaded watches that ladies wore as necklaces or brooches. Around the same time, women were the first to adopt the new concept of watches for the wrist, decades ahead of men’s decision to wear their timepiece on the wrist rather than in the pocket.

In a continuity of this expertise devoted to feminine timekeeping, the Rendez-Vous collection was created in 2012. It was created to express modern femininity through a distinctive and pure aesthetic, showcasing mechanical calibres with added complications – a groundbreaking concept at a time when it was still rare for women’s watches to have mechanical complications. The first Rendez-Vous Tourbillon was introduced in 2012, since then, the Rendez-Vous collection has grown over the years to include models of different sizes, in a variety of metals and with a wide range of movements and decorative details.

An eye-catching serenity blue dial, the sparkle of diamonds and a tourbillon escapement

The new Rendez-Vous Jewellery Tourbillon is distinguished by a signature dial in ‘Serenity Blue’ – a unique blue-green colour that appeared for the first time in 2023. As the wearer moves her wrist, the colour appears to vary in tone and intensity depending on the angle and reflection of the light, metamorphosing from soft silvery-grey through glowing aquamarine to rich serenity blue – an effect enhanced by the sunray finish.

The dial colour is complemented by an alligator strap in a matching shade of blue. Both the strap and its pink gold folding clasp are interchangeable, enabling the wearer to personalise the watch with different colours or materials from the Maison’s wide range of straps.

Amplifying the harmony and balance of the design, the heart of the dial is decorated with a circle of brilliant-cut diamonds, intersected by a smaller circle of diamonds that draws the eye to the tourbillon. Showcasing the gem-setting expertise of La Grande Maison’s in-house Métiers Rares^TM atelier, an additional ring of diamonds is set on the bezel; diamonds form an unbroken line across the case side from the tip of one lug to the tip of the other; and the crown is reverse-set with a round brilliant-cut diamond. In total, the Rendez-Vous Jewellery Tourbillon is illuminated with 215 diamonds, representing 2.52 carats. The colour of the pink gold case is matched by the Rendez-Vous collection’s signature applied ‘floral’ numerals Hands and applied ‘JL’ logo.

Visible through the aperture in the 6 o’clock position on the dial, the tourbillon escapement makes one revolution every 60 seconds. Designed to counteract the effect of gravity on the accuracy of the timekeeping mechanism, the tourbillon also offers a fascinating view into the mechanics of the watch as it spins on its axis in an endlessly mesmerising dance. A finely polished pink gold hand with an arrow-head tip indicates the running seconds as it traces the circle of diamonds set around the aperture.

Like every Jaeger-LeCoultre movement, the high-precision automatic Calibre 978 was designed, assembled and decorated within the Maison’s fully integrated Manufacture. The minute detail of the hand-decorated tourbillon gears can be seen from the dial side, whereas the refinement of the movement and its hand-finished components can also be admired through the sapphire case back.

Presented in pink gold with a glowing green sunray-brushed dial and matching green alligator leather strap, this new rendition of the Rendez-Vous Dazzling Night & Day deftly marries the spirit of fine watchmaking with the codes of high jewellery. The radiance of 168 diamonds draws the eye to the rich colour of the dial.

On the bezel, 108 diamonds, form two concentric rings around the case. There is an airy quality to these glittering circles, thanks to the claw (or ‘griffe’) setting of the outer ring of 36 stones. A classical jewellery technique that requires great precision, claw setting is designed to maximise the presence of each stone by allowing light to pass through the diamonds from every angle while minimising the visible metal. The fine gold claws hold the diamonds high, giving the impression that they are floating around the watch case, rather than anchored to it. Completing the case, an inverted diamond is set into the winding crown and three diamonds are set on each of the four lugs.

On the dial, an inner circle of 47 diamonds draws the eye to the Night & Day indication. Set on a disc that rotates every 24 hours, a pink gold crescent moon with a backdrop of stars slowly alternates with a polished golden sun as night turns to day. Signature elements of the Rendez-Vous Dazzling add further refinement: hours are marked by applied Arabic numerals in the emblematic Floral style and polished golden hemispheres.

Set within the 36mm case, Calibre 898 is a self-winding mechanical movement developed and produced entirely in-house and providing a power reserve of 38 hours. The transparent sapphire case-back reveals some fine decoration and finishing in classical watchmaking style: blued screws, circular graining on the wheels, and Côtes de Genève on the plates and the open-worked pink gold winding rotor.

An exquisitely feminine expression of time that celebrates both precision and artistry, the new trilogy unites Eastern and Western artistic traditions and links the richness of rare decorative crafts with the technical sophistication of high watchmaking.

As a joyful ode to nature and its special place in the Asian artistic tradition, the new Rendez-Vous Sonatina trilogy calls upon three of the decorative crafts that Jaeger-LeCoultre has so thoroughly mastered in its Métiers Rares® (Rare Handcrafts™) atelier: miniature-painting, lacquer work and gem-setting.

The use of lacquer, with its incomparable translucence and rich lustre, draws on deep links between Asian craft and European style. An ancient craft, of which the first known examples date back to the end of the Neolithic period, urushi lacquer was first brought from Asia to the West in the 16th century. Highly prized for its precious appearance and exotic origins, it has had a profound impact on European art and taste ever since.

Plants and animals have always been highly symbolic in Asian cultures, imbued with special powers and attributes, and scenes from nature play an important role in Asian art history. Closely studying the correct forms and anatomy of plants and animals, artists have for centuries reproduced them in delicate and highly accurate detail. Nature-painting reached its apogee with "flower-and-bird pictures" (known as kachōga in Japan and Hwajohwa in Korea), although subjects were not limited only to flowers or birds, and those elements did not necessarily appear together. It is this tradition that Jaeger-LeCoultre’s designers and Métiers Rares® artists have interpreted on the dials of the new timepieces, uniting the crafts of lacquer work, miniature-painting and gem-setting with consummate skill.

Three dials; three images – each telling powerfully symbolic story

Peaceful Nature – Crane: Against a background of deep blue-green lacquer, a crane (tsuru in Japan) hovers above a pine tree, the arc of its wings following the curving lines of the dial layout. Revered throughout Asia as an auspicious sign, the crane embodies happiness and a soaring spirit. Symbolising longevity because it was thought to live for 1,000 years, and being monogamous, it often appears in wedding décor, representing a long and peaceful life for the couple. The pine tree, as an evergreen, is also considered a symbol of longevity and virtue.

Peaceful Nature – Kingfisher: A golden-brown dial is adorned with the delicately painted branches of a red quince tree – also a symbol of longevity, renewed and rejuvenated by the reappearance of its blossom every spring. Amid its red blooms perches a kingfisher (hisui in Japan; cuiniao in China). A harbinger of summer, the kingfisher is a positive symbol in almost every cultural tradition, representing beauty and virtue, fidelity and devotion, faithfulness and happy marriage.

Peaceful Nature – Koi: On the black dial, a vivid orange-coloured koi swims beneath the gently rippling surface of a pond, framed by the spreading branches of a willow tree – a symbol of spring and, thus, of romance and feminine charm. The delicate qualities of the willow are balanced by the strength of the koi – believed to confer strength of purpose, courage and perseverance in the face of adversity, bringing the rewards of success, abundance and good fortune.

A tour-de-force of skill, artistry and infinite patience

Executed entirely by hand in the Jaeger-LeCoultre Métiers Rares® atelier, each of these dial exquisite compositions has been brought to life by the artisan in a remarkable ballet of skill and precision over the course of many weeks. To begin, the artisan prepares an absolutely pristine dial surface, then starts the work of building up the gradient colour of the lacquer, layer by layer, to create a richly gleaming background. Only after the layers of lacquer have been fully hardened, can the painting begin.

First, guided only by eye and hand, the artistan applies miniscule dots of gold lacquer paint to imitate the effect of maki-e lacquer (a technique, perfected during the Japanese Edo period, of sprinkling gold powder or fragments of gold leaf onto wet lacquer to create a gradient effect). Next, in a manner similar to oil painting on canvas but on a microscopic scale, the detailed image is formed, one tiny brushstroke at a time – a process taking some 35–40 hours of painstaking and highly focused work. As a final touch, elements of each image are highlighted with tiny gold paillons (flakes), painstakingly applied. Lifelike in detail, with a remarkable sense of movement and visual depth, each of these miniature works of art is imbued with the artisan’s personality and passion, making all of them very subtly different. Finally, multiple layers of translucent lacquer are applied, to seal the completed painting in a lustrous and everlasting coat.

In its composition, the Rendez-Vous Sonatina dial is asymmetrical yet perfectly balanced, anchored by the collection’s signature Floral hands and numerals.  The applied numerals, graduated in size, form a crescent that wraps around the delicate painting. A fine oval-shaped ring of diamonds runs beneath the applied numerals, drawing the eye to the painted image and complementing a glittering circle of grain-set diamonds on the bezel. In the midst of each image, visible through an oval-shaped aperture, the Night & Day indicator completes one rotation every 24 hours in an endless dance of sun, moon and stars.

Set on the edge of the dial, a delicate golden star marks the time of a special rendezvous or meeting, which can be moved into position by a second crown set in the side of the case. When the time comes, a single strike on a gong concealed within the watch mechanism releases a melodious chime to remind the owner of her appointment.

This poetic and whimsical expression of femininity is brought to life by the technical sophistication of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Manufacture Calibre 735, a self-winding movement with a chiming complication and night-day indicator developed specially for the Sonatina. The elegant complexity and fine details of this mechanism is fully revealed by the transparent sapphire case-back.

To complete these watchmaking treasures, an alligator leather strap, complementing the dial colour and given a glowing, pearlised finish, is fastened to the wrist by a pink gold folding buckle.

The Rendez-Vous Star is offered in two enchanting variations: a white gold case with a dial in subtle tones of silvery blue and a pink gold case with a dial in soft golden browns.

Inspired by the magic of shooting stars, the artisans of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Métiers Rares® (Rare Handcrafts™) atelier have harnessed their skills in new ways to depict the beauty and mystery of the night sky. Made of transparent sapphire glass, the uppermost of the dial’s three layers has been sprinkled with transferred stars and miniature hand-painted (on both sides of the sapphire glass) with clouds and a crescent moon, which conceal the shooting star when it is inactive.

Beneath this is a rotating circular disc of titanium with a cut-out of the shooting star – in an intense night blue for the white gold version and in a dark taupe colour for the pink gold version. When activated, the disc spins, sending the star on its curving path across the upper dial. As it passes, the cut-out reveals the deepest layer of the dial – a fixed disc of silvery or golden metal with a glowing gradient finish that accentuates the sense of movement.

Defining the trajectory of the shooting star, a three-quarter circle of diamonds is set into the sapphire glass dial. This is achieved by integrating fine gold threads directly into the glass to anchor the diamonds and enhance the effect of transparency and lightness.

The bezel is set with a circle of glittering diamonds that draw the eye towards the dial and, in keeping with the aesthetic codes of the Rendez-Vous, the upper surfaces of the lugs, and the top of the crown are also diamond-set. To complete these watchmaking treasures, an alligator leather strap, matched to the dial colour and given a glowing, pearlised finish, is fastened to the wrist by a folding buckle.

An Exquisite Display Evokes the Night Sky

Entirely made of blue Aventurine, the dial of the new Rendez-Vous Dazzling Star exquisitely captures the beauty of a star-studded night sky. In the centre, framed by a ring of diamonds, three discs are layered over each other. The first layer, an oval of Aventurine, conceals the shooting star when it is inactive. Beneath it is a circular disc of Aventurine with a cut-out of the shooting star; when activated, this disc spins, sending the star on its curving path across the upper dial. As the star passes, the cut-out reveals the deepest layer of the dial – a fixed disc of golden metal with a glowing gradient finish that accentuates the sense of movement.

Loyal to the codes of the Rendez-Vous collection, this central display is surrounded by a ring of applied numerals in the signature Floral font and applied hemispherical hour markers. The time is indicated on these scales by golden Floral hands. Surrounding the 36mm pink gold case, the Dazzling Rendez-Vous bezel forms two concentric rings. There’s an airy quality to these glittering circles, thanks to the prong (or ‘griffe’) setting of the outer ring of 36 stones. A classical jewellery technique introduced in the Rendez-Vous collection in 2019, it is an exquisite testament to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s gem-setting expertise. Fine gold claws hold the diamonds high, allowing light to pass through them from every angle, maximising the presence of each stone while minimising the visible metal. To complete the watch case, the upper surfaces of the lugs are set with diamonds and an inverted diamond is set into the crown.

Revisiting its much-loved celestial theme on the occasion of 76^th Venice International Film Festival – La Biennale di Venezia, Jaeger-LeCoultre is delighted to present a magnificent new interpretation of its alluring Rendez-Vous Celestial watch for women.

RENDEZ-VOUS CELESTIAL

The Northern Lights: Aurora Borealis. Named after the Ancient Roman goddess of the dawn, and visible only on the darkest nights near the Arctic Circle, this awe-inspiring phenomenon has fascinated mankind since the beginning of time. Of all the mysteries of the cosmos, none seems more enigmatic than this.

A pair of beautiful Rendez-Vous Celestial jewellery watches pays homage to this otherworldly spectacle, capturing the vivid greens, purples, pinks and blues that stream and dance across the sky.

When Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the Rendez-Vous in 2012, it was a rare example of a high-complication watch created specifically for women; since then, this mechanically sophisticated and visually entrancing timepiece has been reinterpreted several times, in different materials. In this new ‘Northern Lights’ edition, mother-of-pearl and multi-coloured sapphires take centre stage, uniting two of the Metiers Rares® that Jaeger-LeCoultre has so thoroughly mastered – gem-setting, and hand-painting.

Asymmetrical in composition, the dial is formed of two sections, set at different heights. On the upper section, the curvy Floral numerals – a signature of the Rendez-Vous collection – are graduated in size, to form a crescent that hovers above the lower dial. Outlined by an elliptical band of pink gold that draws the eye deeper into it, this lower section carries a hand-transferred imprint of a star chart, together with the signs of the Zodiac and names of the months. Displaying the night sky as it appears above Jaeger-LeCoultre’s home in the Vallée de Joux, the star chart shows the changing positions of the constellations in real time. The automatic mechanical movement Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 809/1 turns the disc counterclockwise in relation to the stars, almost imperceptibly, in step with the rotation of the Earth in 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds.

For the ‘Northern Lights’ edition, both sections of the mother-of-pearl dial are hand-painted with swirls of colour that reproduce the ethereal patterns of the Aurora Borealis – flowing seamlessly from the upper to lower dials. Shades of green and turquoise set the tone for one model; purples and blues dominate on the other – the colours intensified by the glowing mother-of-pearl beneath them. As the sky disc turns, the pattern of the background colours gently shifts, in a subtle echo of the dancing movement of the aurora.

A hand-polished golden star – emblem of the Rendez-Vous collection – is set on the edge of the dial; by turning the second crown, it can be moved into position to mark the time of a special rendezvous.

The rich tones of the dial are echoed on the bezel, which is set with a dazzling, colour-graduated circle of 64 baguette-cut sapphires. To complete the gem-set case, the lugs and two crowns are highlighted with diamonds. A matching alligator strap in turquoise or violet completes these rare timepieces.

This joyful expression of the cosmic world is brought to life by Calibre 809/1, a self-winding movement developed and produced within the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture. Created specially for the Rendez-Vous Celestial, this technically sophisticated movement incorporates a calendar mechanism to rotate the celestial disc in cadence with the changing night sky.

While the complex movement is testament to the precision and technical skills of La Grande Maison’s finest watchmakers, the finishing and decoration of the movement, displayed beneath the transparent sapphire case-back, reveals their artistry. For Jaeger-LeCoultre, the moon and stars have a special resonance, due to the exceptional clarity of the night sky above its home in Switzerland’s Vallée de Joux, and this year its watchmakers and artistic craftsmen return to the celestial theme. To coincide with the 76th Venice International Film Festival – La Biennale di Venezia, La Grande Maison presents a dazzling new interpretation of that most beloved of astronomical complications, the moon phase.

DAZZLING RENDEZ-VOUS MOON

The moon: Luna. Symbol of romance and femininity. The source of nature’s ebb and flow, the cycle of the seasons, and inspiration for artists and poets. The closest heavenly body to Earth, yet still so enigmatic.

Dazzling Rendez-Vous Moon pays tribute to feminine strength and beauty, presenting La Grande Maison’s emblematic moon phase function in a magnificent new setting. Echoing the serene beauty of the night sky, the icy sparkle of diamonds is warmed by pink gold and complemented by glowing white mother of pearl.

This new, fully gem-set interpretation of Dazzling Rendez-Vous follows the launch of Dazzling Rendez-Vous Night & Day (in white gold or pink gold) and Dazzling Rendez-Vous Moon (in white gold) at SIHH in January this year, followed by the ruby-set Dazzling Rendez-Vous Red, on the occasion of Shanghai International Film Festival in June.

The Dazzling Rendez-Vous Moon bezel comprises 108 diamonds, forming two concentric rings around the watch case. There’s an airy quality to these glittering circles, thanks to the claw (or ‘griffes’) setting of the outer ring of 36 stones. A classical jewellery technique – indeed, it was employed by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s craftsmen for Model 101, the celebrated High Jewellery design of the 1920s – it requires great precision. Designed to maximise the presence of each stone, the setting allows light to pass through the diamonds from every angle, while minimising the visible metal. In Dazzling Rendez-Vous the fine gold claws hold the diamonds high, giving an impression that they’re almost floating around the watch case, rather than anchored to it. To complete the case, diamonds are also set into the lugs and the winding crown.

The sumptuous, fully-set bracelet is a masterpiece of the jewellery crafts: Jaeger-LeCoultre’s gem-setters have bezel-set 310 diamonds (22.27 carats), linking them seamlessly together to form a river of diamonds that wraps around the wrist as softly as a ribbon.

The moonlight-white mother-of-pearl dial abounds with subtle details: on an outer ring, mirror-polished golden spheres mark the hours; on the main hours ring, each of the applied pink gold numerals is set on a separate mother-of-pearl ‘tile’, all anchored by an inner circle of 47 diamonds.

It is a perfect setting for a romantic and lovely moon phase display. Visible through an opening at 6 o’clock, the new design features a shiny mother-of-pearl moon floating against a starry aventurine night sky, and playing hide-and-seek behind a cloud of carved mother-of-pearl as it cycles through its different phases over the course of a month.

Uniting La Grande Maison’s artistic skills with its renowned technical acumen, the Dazzling Rendez-Vous Moon is powered by the Calibre 925/A1 – a self-winding mechanical movement developed and produced in-house and providing a power reserve of 38 hours. The transparent sapphire case-back reveals some fine decoration and finishing in the classical style: blued screws, circular graining, Côtes de Genève and the pink gold signature winding rotor with Côtes de Genève decoration.

Lifelike in their detail, with a remarkable sense of visual depth, each of these miniature works of art is subtly different, imbued with the artisan’s personality and passion. A fine oval-shaped ring of diamonds draws the eye to the painted image where, set among the blooms, in a free-form, flower-shaped aperture, the Night & Day indicator is visible.

Set on the edge of the dial, a delicate gold star marks the time of a special rendezvous, moved into position by a second crown. When the time comes, the watch releases a single, melodious chime to remind the owner of her appointment.

A circle of brilliant-cut diamonds completes the bezel and within it, gleaming like moonlight, is the silvery-white mother-of-pearl dial – a perfect foil for the Night & Day display. Visible through an opening at 6 o’clock, a golden crescent moon alternates with a shining sun, as night turns to day in an endless dance of time.

The row of 72 diamonds on the bezel is echoed by a ring of 47 smaller diamonds on the inner dial. Set between these diamond circles, the pink gold Floral numerals stand out in warm contrast to the iridescent white dial. At 6 o’clock, the tourbillon reveals its spectacularly complex system of predominantly hand-decorated gears. Seemingly suspended in mid-air, its balance wheel oscillates within the carriage to perform one revolution every 60 seconds, setting the beat of its high-precision automatic movement, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 978.

Showcasing centuries of watchmaking expertise

The tourbillon needs no introduction. Yet on each and every new interpretation designed by the engineers and artisans of the Grande Maison, this watch complication offers a captivating, almost hypnotic spectacle. The halo of brilliant-cut diamonds glittering on the bezel add to this sensation, mirrored on a smaller scale in the centre of the dial and around the tourbillon. Its adornment expresses the noble heritage of Rare Handcrafts “Métiers Rares®” executed by generations of artisans under the roof of the manufactory. They include the 215 hand-set diamonds, which require many hours of attention within the Rare Handcrafts “Métiers Rares®” workshop.

With the pink gold models embellished with the shimmering iridescence of mother-of-pearl, a delicate, almost vibrant femininity radiates from the central dial of the new Rendez-Vous Tourbillon. Fitted with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 809/1, these two new interpretations of the Rendez-Vous Celestial showcase an iconic function that truly expresses the collection’s name. As it marks out its constant course, the mysterious star serves as a reminder of the time of a future rendezvous.

A sophisticated watch meets high jewellery

A sky map, the ultimate feminine function, is encircled by a dazzling bezel set with either a graduated display of pink sapphires shifting into shades of amethyst or with brilliant-cut diamonds. Enhanced by a constantly moving star, the dial displays the changing constellations and signs of the zodiac, which are enamelled in shades of either pink-gold or silver to draw the eyes deep into the starry sky.

In addition to the precious gem-setting, the enamelled floral numerals and twelve constellations perpetuate the traditions of Rare Handcrafts “Métiers Rares®”. To continue the glittering spectacle of the sapphires or diamonds in the dark, these two jewellery watches come alive at nightfall.

The 21st Shanghai International Film Festival joyfully coincides with the 185th anniversary of Jaeger-LeCoultre. The endearing partnership endows this occasion with even greater significance. This year, the Rendez-Vous Night & Day Tribute to Cinema, created for this unique anniversary, will make its appearance at the exhibition during the festival. The Rendez-Vous Night & Day Tribute to Cinema is a limited edition of only 100 pieces comprised of a rose gold case set with diamonds. The elegant white dial highlighted with a dash of red at the Night & Day indicator, a replica of tender lights caressing your wrist. Available in steel or rose gold, the Rendez-Vous Moon Medium includes a moon phase, with its finely worked elliptical guilloché appearing both on the dial and on the disk that bears the moon phase itself.

With a time lag of only one day every 972 years, the moon phase function boasts the ultimate precision. The glistening moon has a sandy finish, lending it a surprising sense of depth. The first appearance of rose gold in this exceptional 36mm timepiece is enhanced with one of the signatures of the Métiers Rares™ of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture – the gem setting. Its golden dial, burning with the brightness of a thousand fires, is the backdrop for a tender pearl moon and a watch that is feminine in the extreme, its hue reminiscent of a dawning day, as the sun rises in a cloudless sky.
