Jaeger-LeCoultre is pleased to announce its participation in the third edition of the Homo Faber Biennial in Venice in September. Homo Faber celebrates the savoir-faire and unique stories of talented craftspeople from around the globe, honouring the priceless human skill behind the creation of beautiful, handcrafted objects. Imagined by celebrated film director and interior architect Luca Guadagnino, and architect Nicolò Rosmarini, the celebration, titled The Journey of Life, will feature the work of more than 400 highly skilled craftspeople from 50 countries, in 10 themed exhibition spaces. The Homo Faber 2024 will take place at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the island of S.Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, from 1–30 September, 2024.

An immersive exhibition offering rare insight into precious craft skills

Showcasing the exceptional savoir-faire of its Métiers Rares™ atelier and reflecting a core value of the Maison, Jaeger-LeCoultre has been chosen as a participant in the ‘Nature’ exhibition. The Maison will underline the inheritance of traditional crafts, the value of passing down savoir-faire from generation to generation, and the influence of symbolic imagery throughout history.

Animating the Maison’s exhibit and offering visitors rare insight into precious craft skills, craftsmen from the Manufacture will give live demonstrations of the crafts of enamelling, engraving, gem setting and watchmaking at different times throughout the month-long event.

To celebrate the talent and accumulated savoir-faire in both watchmaking and the decorative arts, Jaeger-LeCoultre will launch three new Reverso limited-edition timepieces during the Homo Faber Biennial.

Homo Faber Fellowship: supporting the transmission of savoir-faire

Reinforcing its commitment to supporting the preservation and transmission of vitally important craft skills for future generations, Jaeger-LeCoultre last year became the partner of the Michelangelo Foundation in the Homo Faber Fellowship. A long-term initiative, the programme equips talented graduates with the creative and business skills necessary for integration into the professional craft sector. The inaugural cycle began with a month-long residential masterclass based at the studio of the renowned Portuguese contemporary artist Joana Vasconcelos and brought together 20 duos of Master craftsmen and newly graduated talents (Fellows). Workshops in creative skills were complemented by a design case study presented by Jaeger-LeCoultre, and a bespoke programme focused on business skills and entrepreneurial vision presented and certified by ESSEC Business School. This was followed by a six-month residential placement for the Fellows in the studios of their corresponding Masters, during which they exchanged ideas and further developed their techniques through the co-creation of an object.

A selection of these objects has been curated for the Homo Faber2024, where they will be displayed in different exhibition areas, corresponding to the creative visions and craft skills that each embodies. The objects made by the duos of master artisans and fellows that have been selected are:

During this week dedicated to craft in London, the Michelangelo Foundation will present the work of the twenty duos of artisans who took part in the first edition of the Homo Faber Fellowship, an education programme supported by Jaeger-LeCoultre.

After a one-month creative and entrepreneurial course taught by ESSEC Business School, fellows spent six months in the workshops of their paired master artisans. They were based in one of the following six countries: Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Greece, France, or the United Kingdom.

Creativity, but above all, the transmission of knowledge and artisanal techniques, were at the heart of these months spent working and collaborating together. Twenty objects created by the artisan duos will be on show in London from May 14 to 18 at Cromwell Place. Visitors will discover a diverse range of crafts and techniques , including ceramics, textiles, wood marquetry, stone sculpture, silversmithing, feather working and basket weaving.

Echoing this celebration of craftsmanship, Jaeger-LeCoultre will showcase its watchmaking expertise in its boutique at 13 Old Bond Street, London.

On May 15 and 16 2024, visitors can discover the enameling technique used on the case of the Reverso watch. The Reverso watch, created in 1931, with its unique pivoting case system, offers its owner the choice of personalizing the back of the watch with an engraving, or a miniature enamel work, mastered within the walls of the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre, in the Vallée de Joux.

Jaeger-LeCoultre and Michelangelo Foundation announce the successful completion of the first stage of the inaugural edition of Homo Faber Fellowship. The seven-month programme began in Portugal in September with a month-long residential masterclass in creativity and entrepreneurship certified by ESSEC Business School.

Held at the Lisbon studio of the renowned Portuguese contemporary artist Joana Vasconcelos, the masterclass brought together 20 duos of Master Artisans and newly graduated talents (Fellows). ESSEC presented a bespoke programme to the participants, which included entrepreneurial vision, leadership skills, brand desirability, digital marketing and business planning – topics new to the audience of recent graduates, and essential knowledge for aspiring craft professionals.

Joanna Vasconcelos, who has been chosen as the ‘Godmother’ of this first Homo Faber Fellowship cohort, shared the artistic vision that has made her so successful – that of combining territorial and ancestral crafts with a modern point of view – and revealed her working methods in hands-on workshops. Further support was given by Passa ao Futuro design agency, which addressed the issues of design and sustainability.

During the masterclass, Jaeger-LeCoultre presented a design case study related to Art Deco and the Maison’s CEO, Catherine Rénier, together with Lionel Favre, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Product Design Director, travelled to Lisbon to meet the participants and exchange ideas with them. Catherine Rénier shared Jaeger-LeCoultre’s vision and values related to craft and education – values rooted in a long history of facilitating the transmission of knowledge between masters and trainees to preserve vitally important skills for future generations.

The masterclass will now be followed by a six-month residential placement for each of the Fellows in the workshop of their corresponding Master. The Masters’ ateliers are located in five European countries – France, Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain – and the Fellows have been drawn from a variety of backgrounds and a diverse range of crafts, including ceramics, textiles, bicycle building, feather-work and basket weaving.

Beginning in late October, the six-month residential placement in the Masters’ workshops will focus on the development of practical skills. While the Masters will teach their traditional savoir-faire, the relationship is envisaged as a two-way exchange, with the Fellows bringing a modern sensibility to their work and enabling the Masters to see their crafts through fresh eyes. During their six-month residencies, the Fellows will be continuously mentored and will co-create an object with their Master, with the potential for it to be commercialised. The co-creations will be based on a theme related to Art Deco.

Why Homo Faber Fellowship?

The scholarship programme seeks to make crafts culturally, economically and socially relevant for students of applied arts and crafts.

The initiative is the result of an in-depth research of the craft sector. It identified the barriers experienced by young craftspeople on their quest to build a career in craft and the economic restraints faced by master artisans to train younger generations. In France, 94% of master artisans do not train an apprentice, showing the scope for positive change, especially given that the actual number of students trained in manual work and craftsmanship is not sufficient to cover demand. In Italy, Altagamma estimates that within 5 years the member maisons will need to hire 346,000 new artisans and technicians.  According to a study by Comité Colbert in France, 20,000 manual positions are currently vacant amongst their 93 member maisons.

Given that it takes on average 10 years of continuous training to master a craft, the need to expand training opportunities in the craft sector is visible. Without transmission to younger generations, many artisan workshops face the danger of closing down and key skills being lost. Based on a recent survey we carried out on our community of 3,000 Homo Faber artisans, more than 85% work alone in a mono-structure. The hope is to create thriving artisan businesses that continue to evolve with market demands to the extent that they can welcome trainees and secure the future of their workshops. This requires intergenerational exchanges, life-long learning and entrepreneurial skills.

How does the Fellowship align with Jaeger-LeCoultre’s ethos?

The Homo Faber Fellowship programme aligns perfectly with Jaeger-LeCoultre’s values which are rooted in a long history of facilitating the sharing of knowledge between master and trainee.

The partnership builds on the Maison’s existing in-house apprenticeship programmes. For more than 30 years, the Maison has run dedicated programmes for apprentices to welcome them into the workshops.

In 2021, a new Training Centre was inaugurated, dedicated to training young talents not only in watchmaking but in related occupations such as micro-engineering, quality control, sales and customer service. By extending its support to the wider crafts community, the Maison’s aim is to help young artisans from many different craft backgrounds to access a better life through a profession in the craft sector.

Driven by the value of work, the Maison’s mission is to safeguard its traditional savoir-faire and ensure it is handed down to younger generations. Investing in education is a priority, and its corporate education programme is dedicated to supporting the next generation by partnering with schools and universities worldwide. 

How does the Fellowship respond to a changing creative job market?

The programme addresses these key concerns by sponsoring master artisans to train talented young graduates, transmitting to them both their knowledge and skills through hands-on exchange. The goal is to create a model that stimulates change and growth in the craft sector and responds to job openings. The Fellowship develops the employability of applied arts and craft graduates by equipping them with the practical and business skills they require to pursue a sustainable career in the craft sector.

Who is the Fellowship for and what does it offer its participants?

Education has been a key focus of the Michelangelo Foundation since its inception. Its previous programmes have paved the way for the Fellowship, a wider-reaching initiative thanks to key studies and the pivotal partnership with Jaeger-LeCoultre, as well as with local partners and sponsors.

The Fellowship is open to applied arts and crafts graduates who are looking for the next step on their path to becoming a professional artisan. Fellows must show talent, passion and creativity, while participating master artisans should demonstrate a willingness to train an aspiring artisan and a need to protect their skills. The Fellowship will favour master artisans whose craft has a strong connection to the local area, in an attempt to support cultural heritage.

For the first edition this life-changing opportunity will benefit 20 master artisan and fellow duos based in Europe, with the ambition of reaching other corners of the world in the future. The seven-month Fellowship incorporates a month-long entrepreneurial masterclass developed and certified by ESSEC Business School at Joana Vasconcelos’ studio, in addition to a six-month placement for practical skills acquisition in the workshop of a master artisan. Different experts in their fields, from designers to communication specialists, will provide mentoring advice to the duos during the course of the Fellowship.

There could be no better setting in which to showcase the time-honoured skills of La Grande Maison’s Métiers Rares workshops: presenting the priceless human skills behind the creation of rare objects, Homo Faber brings together 15 exhibitions that celebrate the savoir-faire of exceptional master artisans from all over Europe. This year, reaffirming the shared values of craftsmanship that transcend cultures and borders, Homo Faber features 12 Japanese Living National Treasures as guests of honour.

In homage to this connection, La Grande Maison has chosen to depict the sakura or cherry blossom on the new Atmos Régulateur. An emblem of Japan, cherry blossom has become a universal metaphor for Spring, a symbol of renewal and a precious reminder of the fleeting nature of life, and of time itself. In keeping with this year’s Stellar Odyssey theme, the Atmos movement features a moon-phase display – the best-known and perhaps most beloved celestial complication of all.

Noble in presence and delicate in detail, the Atmos Régulateur ‘Cherry Blossom’ is a one-of-a-kind work of art, showcasing the clock’s mechanism within a transparent glass cabinet set between two dramatic panels of black Grand Feu enamel.

A branch of cherry blossom, hand-painted in enamel, extends seamlessly from one side, across the dial ring, to the opposite panel. Petals scatter in the air around it, as if shaken free by a passing breeze.

With the enamelling alone requiring 200 hours of dedicated work by the master artisans in the Métiers Rares® atelier of Jaeger-LeCoultre, this is the largest enamelled piece ever undertaken at La Grande Maison. While the enamellers have thoroughly mastered the techniques of enamelling on watch cases and dials, the large scale of this piece presented an entirely different set of challenges. Rising to it, the artisans of the atelier worked closely together, spending countless hours on preliminary research, exchanging ideas, experimenting and making trials before the enamelling could begin in earnest. Materials and techniques were examined and reconsidered – and a new kiln specified, to accommodate such large pieces.

For the panels – measuring 196mm by 105.2mm – copper was found to be more suitable than the gold used for enamelling on watches. For such large surfaces, the enamellers had to perfect the ‘dry enamelling’ technique of sifting powdered pigment onto the copper plates (rather like dusting the top of a cake with icing sugar), repeating the process again and again, to achieve the desired depth and uniformity of black. After every layer, the panels had to be fired, then cooled and perfectly flattened – with every stage carrying the risk of bubbling, cracking or dust specks, any of which would ruin the work.

For the two dial rings, it was determined that silver was the best material – despite its being a soft metal and therefore less resistant to firing at the high temperatures required for grand feu enamel. Normally, to prevent deformation, the back of an object is prepared with ‘contre-email’, but in this case it was impossible since the dial is visible from behind. The rings were hollowed out to form a trough into which the enamel was applied. Then, as for the panels, came the challenge of multiple firings.

Finally, when the black enamel backgrounds were completed to perfection, the work of the miniature-painter could begin – bringing with it the almost contradictory needs for artistic flair and absolute precision. As with the black enamel, this work was done in a series of layers, each needing to be fired, with every firing again carrying the risk of damaging everything that had been done before. To succeed in such work is testament to an extraordinary level of finesse, and a degree of mastery that can be achieved only with countless years of experience.

Invented in 1928, with a unique mechanism that is driven by tiny changes in air temperature, the Atmos is an extraordinary timepiece and an objet d’art in equal measure. Since the 1970s the Manufacture has invited a series of leading designers and proponents of the artistic crafts to reinterpret this mechanical prodigy. With a clear sense of artistic intention, this new interpretation, the Atmos Régulateur ‘Cherry Blossom’, amplifies the distinctive identity of the clock with balanced proportions and visual harmony allied to fine artistry.

The movement of this exceptional piece, conceived and entirely produced within La Grande Maison, is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 582, which is distinguished by its regulator display. With an architecture defined by circles within circles, the large minutes ring and smaller hours ring are complemented by a monthly calendar and moon-phase display, as well as by the shape of the annular balance that slowly oscillates beneath the displays. The moon-phase indication is so precise that it will take 3,821 years to diverge by just one day from astronomical reality.

As a one-of-a-kind work of art, the Atmos Régulateur ‘Cherry Blossom’ is testament not only to La Grande Maison’s exceptional depth of savoir-faire but also to its commitment to preserving rare skills within the Manufacture, supporting and encouraging the expansion of those skills, and celebrating human creativity.

About the ATMOS

Born in 1928, the Atmos is a clock like no other. Invented by a Swiss engineer, Jean-Léon Reutter, it appears to defy the laws of physics, running for centuries without the need for any conventional energy source or rewinding. Instead, its mechanism is powered by normal, everyday fluctuations in air temperature; a variation of just one degree Celsius being sufficient to guarantee two days of running time. Since LeCoultre & Cie acquired the patents for Atmos in the 1930s, the Manufacture has harnessed the skills of its watchmakers to continually make technical improvements, and the talents of its craftsmen to enhance the beauty of the clock, which has become a prized objet d’art. While the glass cube based on the Art Deco design of the Atmos I has become an instantly recognisable classic, Jaeger-LeCoultre has also collaborated with renowned designers and master artisans to create special editions of the Atmos.

Organised by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, the Homo Faber Event is an international exhibition that champions artisanal talent, showcasing an impressive variety of materials, techniques and skills through live demonstrations, immersive digital experiences and imaginative displays of handcrafted creations. The 2022 edition highlights craft’s role in creating a more sustainable and inclusive future and offers a rare chance to experience craft and its connections to the arts and the design world. Imagined by a team of world-renowned curators and designers, 15 exhibitions transform the magnificent spaces of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, on San Giorgio Maggiore Island in Venice. Guided tours are available, led by students participating in the Young Ambassadors Programme. In conjunction with the exhibition, Homo Faber in Città offers tailor-made itineraries enabling visitors to experience craftsmanship throughout Venice.
